Sept the 1st 1864
Thursday morning by the hand of your friend and brother H. M. I atempt
to answer yours of August 8 writen at Algiers La which I received the 27
of aug. and was very glad to hear from you again and to hear of your
health improving I was some uneasy when I got the the letter stating
that you was in feeble health but my trust was in god that you would be
spaired to return home to see us all in the flesh againe. Now you may
think it strainge that I dident get my letter wrote so as to send it
out on thursday in stid of friday. Well I will tell you the reasin.
I came down to the office yesterday and H was gon down to knoxville
to help Mr Harein raise a stable and dident get back time anuff to write ---
leter so it will have to go out tomorrow eavning Well now for the answer.
We have had lotts of raine lateley ------ corn has come out considerably
----- we will raise more corn this ------ general thing than last year
pray --- frost dont come too soon yet my corn aint as good as last year.
We have had our wheet threshed and had our straw stacked first rate.
I had 36 bushel of wheet to my shear. Wheet is worth $1.50 cents per bushel.
Wheet turned out very good. ---------- Now you wrote about some wimin having
such hard times. Well I supose some is very cearse but as for me and chaps
we have aplenty. I have meet and corn aplenty to do me and expect to have a
nuff to give the old souldier a diner when he gets home. So you nedent be
uneasy about us a sufering for if I was kneedy I have friends who I can go
to and get what I want. I will give you the pricis of things. I have told
you the price of wheet. Old corn is worth 1.00 to 1.10 Bacon from 15 to 20
cents per pound oats 75 cents per bushel Huffman is offering to engage pork
at 10 dollars per hundred. There is some men a buying hoggs to fat at five
cents. Cattle aint as high as they was some time back. Beef if a selling at
6 cent net. Horses brings near any price a man will ask for ----- Hirin labor
is very high. I dident tell you what the threshers charge a ------ for threshing.
They charged 8 cents ------- Just left the sttement ----- Prices is factory
best quality ----- Calico 30 to fifty cents coffee 60 cents sujgar 30 cents
so anuff on hat Eggs 18 cents butter 20 cents ginsang 1.20 cents chickens
2.00 to 2.50 per doisn and in conclusion on the prices I will say saw hoggs
in market 1.25 cents per hundred ----------------- Well I will write some
about religious matters. We have had a pleasant conference year. there
has bin some seventy actsesians to church and a good number converted to
god but our conference year ends today.. Brother Shirley will preach his
last surment at half past ten oclock am today and also at Mt Zion at 3 oclock pm
but we hope he will be sent back next year to this circuit. The writer
preached from Romans 8ch and first verse for us at the grove last sabath
eavnin well Just Returned from Church I set down to finish this letter
Br Shirley preached a good surmunt and bid us fare well for a while We
paid 35 dollaars more than what the Estimating Comity alowed him so khyou
see we are ahead in th finance matter well I could write anbout the Church
all day which --- sujpose would be interesting to you ----- read as it is
to me to write while ----- ing About the Church I will say ---- at the
french Lick Circuit is in a bad ----- Br Julian and maples had --- which
Resulted in a lawsuit in --- which Julian got beat he talks of asking an
apeaal I saw him and I advised him to drop it for he will get beat agaian
I am thankdul to god that wou Circuit is at pease which is very Desireable
both in Chkurch and state so turn over sept 2 am Just Returned from Mr Daves
house Raising I will finish this letter Rachel has just Come I must hasten
to a close I will say in Conclusian that the general health of the Country
is good my opinion is that well well have a healthley fall your folks is
all well Except your better part she is all most down to see the old souldier
well I must quit the maill boy has come You must take the will for the deed
