Near Vicksburg
Dear brothernlaw and kind sister I am permitted
to try to write you a few lines to inform you
that I recieved your very kind and wellborn
letter Dated May 21 I was more then glad to hear
from you and sister when I recieved your letter I
had to take a cry when I read your letter and
se where you say you se so much trouble and a
great deal of it on account of absence
Sister you said in your letter that it seamed
to you as I never would return home sister it is
very doubtful for there is great risk to run and
there is no telling who will have to fall and it
seames like the 49 has allwas got to take a very
dangerous position in time of battle though sister
we have a good commander, our Colonel, he knows
how to move us in time of battle to not get many
hurt there is a great deal in the way we are moved
in time that we are engages with the enemy to keep
men from geting hurt. Our Colonel is now acting
brigadier general and our liutenant Col is sick
we are commanded now by our major all the men
men that we have had wounded and left behind on
this march has been taken prisioner and parrold
John L Carrd? never come with us he let on like
he was sick
