Black river Bridge June 26 1863
Brother inlaw and sister I received yours
Dated June 13 and I was glad to hear from you and
I would like very much to se you I have been sick
for nearly a month I was very bad for a few days,
the boys all began to think I was going to dye
though I got a little better though I am very poor
and weak and it appears as I cant gain any strenght
I have some fever yet. Robburt Biggs is getting
better William VanCampen have been pirty sick with
fever though I think he is on the mend This is a
hard old place to be sick for the water is very
bad and nothing here that a sick person can eat
you can get a pickel for about 7 cents a peace and
you can buy Aple butter for one dollor and 25 cents
a quart and then it is not very good. Since I have
been sick I have spent several dollows to try get
something I could eat
Though there is nothing tast well to me I wish it
was so we oculd get up the river where we could
get good water to drink and where the weather would
not be so warm and where it is more healthyer I will
have to rest awhile. the fight is going on at
Vicksburg I hope they surrender soon. They are looking
very strongly for general Johnson to make and attacked
on us here though I hope he wont I se in the papers
that the 23 Ind have lost several men since they
went to Vicksburg I se Jacob Calloofer was killed
and John Hollor, you no him he lived below Saltilouville
we cant hear nothing here only by papers for I
never get any more letters Sister I hope you will
not forget to write to me you siad in your letters
dated June 13 that you had just wrote a few days
before I never got it this is the first time
I have attempted to write any since I got so bad
though i have had william to write for me. I think
Daniel and Andrew have treated me very bad by not
writing. tell sister Jane I would like to se her
though I fear that that is impossible in this world
though sister I have come to conclusion that is if
it is the good lords will to call me of whil here in
the army I am perfectly willing to go.
