camp cumberlan ford Ky May the 24th 1862 Mr B B Sir I seat my self today as it is raining to drop you a few lines to let you no that I am in tolerable health and hope this will find you and yours all rite now we are camped here at the ford of the cumberlan River 14 miles from the cumberlan gap where the Rebels is well fortified our Regment has ben here near 4 months we have ben up to the gap 3 times we took up 2 canon once and Bombarded them one half day we skermished round one day and come Back to camp I have learned what it is to have Bum shels throughed clost to me them Rebels would as soon kill a man as not we had not said a word Now I can inform you that 7 of our Regments and a large train of Wagons and lots of mules with packegs and 15 canons started to the gap day before yesterday tha went a few miles and was ordered to stop and remain thare yet I cant tell what tha will do our Regment and 3 others here has not ben ordered yet I am sorry to inform you that our Regment is in a bad fix we cant muster over 300 men I guess You have herd that Leroy Inman(1) was dead I tell you that this thing of solgering is not the thing that it is cracked up to be mules cant stand it long and you no tha ought to stand more than men thare is some talk of our Regment going Back somewhere to Recruit there health our men is scattered from here to Indiana at different hospitals we have ben marched through Rain and snow and mud enough last winter to kill the oldest man in the world I think it would Worsted unckel Jessee Potts so no more on this turn over and read Now Mr B B edmison thare is a judgement against me in your cort of a bout 44 Dollars the stay will be out some time in June I have got the money to pay it off and thare is a man here that I can send it home by but he is not going for a week or two if the stay runs out I wont you to have them to hold on awhile and not execute the Widows property for the money will be shore to come When this comes to hand Write to me if you pleas and if you dont pleas Write anyhow Yours truly David S Morgan to B B Edmison Direct your letter to camp cumberlan Ky 49 Regment Indiana Volunteers in care of captaain Ritter co g * as always, I do not correct the spelling or change the text.
