The following pages illustrate the body of work which has emerged from my past fifteen years of art making.Throughout these years a central interest has evolved for me which surfaces as a common thread through various cycles of work. Starting with artist books, printmaking and photography a body of drawings called "Privacy" developed. From it grew the installation "Stations OFF the Cross" which inspired a series called "Buddha Taking a Break". These two in turn were the impetus for my current cycles in progress "Heartland" and "November 9". What fascinates me is how our human condition propells itself within the dynamic of dychotomies, such as grace and coarseness, dignity and brutality, the beautiful and the horrific. In my work I focus on arresting such incongruencies into one simultaneous moment in which neither one nor the other predominates. Instead they are seemingly reconciled into a merged form which is, nevertheless, meant to resonate with its own non-innocence. Personal trauma serves as the narrative backdrop to my work thus the various bodies of work are accompanied by a certain emotional evolution from pain to anger and cynicism, to humor, to an interest in the human drama outside of my personal realm. With the exception of my photographs my work is either on or forged of handmade paper which I make myself. Since handmade paper is such an important ingredient of my visual vocabulary a special page has been devoted to illuminate how I work with this medium. Click on "papermaking" to learn how and why I have devised specific techniques for my particular pictorial needs. Each body of work is listed with its title and an icon and the cycles are lined up chronologically so you may come back to this homepage to check on how it relates to other cycles. - Click on the icon for full view and information on each body of work - Click on papermaking to find out how I work with handmade paper - Click on resume for details on my career - Click on "teaching" for semester summaries of courses I teach at Herron School of Art and for my workshops in papermaking and bookmaking.
