This body of work represents a formative time for me when my ideas began to gel and solidify. Photography interested me in its ability to sample and quickly process. So this body of work is a composite of samplings of staged moments in which I approximate myself to a growing vision. Today I look at my phoptographs as groundwork which was to build a personal vocabulary and inform a lot of my work later to come.

The process was still non-digital then(mid 80's) and I was somewhat charmed by the claim for 'reality' which the medium still held at the time. In this context I tried to create all my manipulations within my props which I carefully and complexly staged. The aparent breaks with reality in these images are produced by the props and not through the printing process : the prints are not manipulated in the darkroom but processed in a completely forward way.
