Stations OFF the Cross

This drawing cycle focusses on the male as a kind of anti-hero. What interested me about the Christ figure is the tradition of his depiction. While this tradition alludes to Christ as heroic and divine while pointing to his maleness it seems to make an effort also to surpress his sexuality . I have always felt that such depictions were in some ways not quite successful , that some unresolved sexuality would lurk behind them. What would happen, I have wondered, if such images were just left to play themselves out to their hidden intentions, and what would be left in the depiction of the heroic and devine. In this cycle I allow this idea to run its course.

I attempt to retain certain elements of the tradition of depiction which I allude to above : the panel-like structure of the images which - away from the wall - have an object like quality; the life size male figure embedded into a worship ambience; the arrangement of the panels into a half circle simulating a place of worship with the object of worship arranged in strategical order.
