Lowell C. Rose, 77
JAN. 22, 1930 — DEC. 2, 2007

Lowell C. Rose, 77, Ph.D., died Sunday, December 2, 2007, at Bloomington Hospital. He was born January 22, 1930, in Rushville, Indiana, the son of Earl and Vivian (Carroway) Rose.

Dr. Rose graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor of Science in Social Studies and Business Education (1952), from Purdue University with a Master of Arts in Social Studies (1955) and received his Ph.D. in School Administration with a minor in Social Studies from Purdue University in 1959. He served with the U.S. Army from 1952-1954, stationed at Ft. Gordon, Georgia.

During his professional career, he taught social studies at DeMotte, IN Junior-Senior High School (1954-1956), Griffith, IN Junior High School (1956-1958), was an instructor and member of the School Survey Team at Purdue University (1958-1959), taught social studies at North Central High School in Indianapolis, IN ((1959-1960), was Director of Research, Information and Testing for the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township (1960-1963), was a lecturer in School Administration in the summers of 1961, 1962 and 1963 for Butler University in Indianapolis. He served as Assistant Superintendent of the Kokomo-Center Township Consolidated School Corp. in Kokomo from 1963-1964 and as Superintendent from 1964-1967.

In 1967 he accepted the position of Executive Secretary of the Indiana School Boards Association and was an Associate Professor in the School of Education at Indiana University, serving until 1971. Dr. Rose was also an Adjunct Professor with the Indiana University School of Education from 1971 until the present. He also served as the Executive Director of Phi Delta Kappa International from 1971-1995 and as the Acting Executive Director of the Indiana Urban Schools Association in 1996-1997 and again from 1998-1999. Since 1999 he was a consultant to the Indiana Urban Schools Association.

Dr. Rose received numerous honors and awards during his career in public education. He was named Distinguished Alumnus of Ball State University (1987), Outstanding Alumni Award, Purdue University Educational Administration Alumni Association (1990), Distinguished Alumnus Award, Purdue University School of Education (1991), Outstanding Educator Award, Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents (1995), was named a Sagamore of the Wabash (1995) and the Distinguished Service Award by the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents (2001).

Survivors include his wife, Mary (Lonergan) Rose of Bloomington, one daughter, Nancy Mitchell (husband, William) of Naperville, IL, David Rose of Bloomington and Bryan Rose (wife Kathryn) of Rockville Centre, NY and three grandchildren; Charlie Mitchell, Lauryn Rose and Natalie Rose. He was preceded in death by one sister, Garnet Rose, and three brothers, Garett Rose, Keith Rose and Dale Rose.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, at St. Paul 's Catholic Center in Bloomington. Friends may greet the family on Wednesday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington.
